We are again hosting internationally acclaimed artists using the superb Bosendorfer concert grand piano, donated to the school by old pupils in memory of former music director Kenneth Brown. Friday October 27th 2023: Julian Metzger cello with Paul Turner piano Julian Metzger: Julian has performed internationally as soloist and chamber musician as well as working with a wide variety of world famous orchestras. Paul Turner Paul is well known to us as a collaborative artist. His sensitive and alert playing displays that rare sense of sixth sense of timing "which is the true accompanist's particular gift". Their programme will include music by Beethoven and Prokofiev.

This overture encapsulates the tragic tale of love, fate, and revenge. Sergei Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini Rachmaninov’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” is a virtuosic and captivating work for piano and orchestra. Based on a theme from Niccolò Paganini’s Violin Caprice No. 24, Rachmaninov takes the simple melody and weaves an intricate tapestry of 24 variations, each displaying his exceptional skill at the piano and melodic inventiveness. Pietro Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana (Intermezzo) Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” Intermezzo paints a vivid picture of the Sicilian countryside, transporting listeners and has become a beloved concert piece in its own right, frequently performed as a standalone work by orchestras worldwide. Edward Elgar: Enigma Variations Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” is a mesmerizing and innovative orchestral work, composed in 1899. Consisting of a theme and fourteen variations, the piece is a heartfelt tribute to Elgar’s friends and acquaintances, each variation representing a musical portrait of a specific individual.

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture evokes the wild seascapes of Scotland, capturing the awe and mystery of the Hebrides islands. Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is rich with lyricism, inspired by the composer’s love for the natural landscapes of America. Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 rounds off the program, a work filled with warmth and pastoral serenity, often referred to as his “sunny symphony,” reflecting the calm and beauty of the natural world.

Mozart’s sparkling Marriage of Figaro Overture sets a joyful tone, while Prokofiev’s Troika captures the wintry spirit with its sleigh-ride theme. Berlioz’s gentle Shepherds’ Farewell and Rimsky-Korsakov’s enchanting The Snow Maiden evoke the magic of the season. Alongside these, traditional carols and Christmas classics are not to be missed! Children will also enjoy a special tour of the orchestra, making this a celebration for all ages!
